Opus 1

I have been playing with the larger Opus Zentangle® tiles.  Just finished two this week and want to share.

By way of background, when I first started to tangle, I usually tangled on large sheets, as big as 17" by 20", pieces of Bristol vellum. Here is an example of one of my early ZIAs, before i went for certification to teach.  I was tangling up to six hours a day using Sharpie Ultra Fine markers or Pilot Precise V5 Extra fine pens.

I haven't done many big pieces lately until I started on the Opus tiles (10.5 by 10.5").  They feel quite different from the big Bristol pieces, in part because of the luscious Fabriano paper, and in part because they are square.  Here are my first three.

Too bad I cannot get them to appear square, which they are.

A ZIA from a consignment store paper reprint of a painting.

A student told me today about about work she had seen of someone tangling their own paintings.

This reminded me of a piece I did a couple of years ago on a paper print that I bought at consignment shop.  I loved the artist's flowers and it was a challenge to tangle each part staying in the moment and without planning.  But it was a wonderful experience.  And I like the outcome.

I tangled with the standare 01 Micron and shaded with Fabrico marker, #181 Cool Grey.

In addition, it came with a lovely pale pink frame, which I fail to show here.

Zentangles and ZIAs from Fourth Graders at an Oakland, CA public school

Below are some examples of the beautiful work that children can do..  Their creativity went through the roof.

This is their very first tile.

From our second session.

Here are some of the Peek-a-boo Zentangle cards are from our third session.  Several students chose not to share their cards for a photo as they contained private messages for the intended recipients.

And finally, in April we explored borders.

Returning to MIchigan

Workshops will be returning to Michigan in March.

A Zia

One of my early ZIAs that  I ran across today.  It just makes me happy remembering how wonderful it is to do a long slow piece, totally intuitively.

Sycamore Leaf

This is a giant California Sycamore leaf tangled by my eight-year-old granddaughter, Sophia.

The only new tangle she was taught that day was Bald by Hsin-Ya Hsu.  Work was done with Sharpies, metallic markers, and Tombow dual brush markers after the l eaf had been covered with Modpodge®.
